ABOUT Me

My name is Katherine Hicks and I am currently a fourth grade teacher at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. From the time that I was a child, I knew that I wanted to be an educator. My parents are both teachers and I have seen the profound impact they have had on the the lives of their students. I remember looking up to them and hoping that I could make as big of a difference as they had. Now, years later, I have that chance!

Before coming to Michigan State, I grew up in a small town in Michigan called Coldwater as the oldest of 5. My loud, boisterous family, ensured that there was never a dull moment in the Hicks household. To this day, my siblings and I run, read, laugh and learn together, much like my "classroom family."

Who am I?
Experience

From the time that I began my college career, global studies were of great interest to me. Therefore, when an opportunity presented itself to teach in China, I could not refuse the offer. There, I spent two weeks traveling to the largest cities and educating students of all ages. To say that it “opened my eyes to other cultures” is an understatement. Suddenly, my primary focus became exploring new customs and cultures and exposing my students to this new/accepting view of individual differences. Two years after my China trip, I volunteered for 3 weeks in a school located on a small island in Fiji. Although it may act as a “tropical paradise” for some, to me, it was exposure to extreme poverty. While there, I worked with a group of 8-9 year old children who had extremely limited resources and had gone without a consistent educator for two years. Although these were difficult conditions, I used this experience as an opportunity to understand an alternative way of living and compare and contrast an education system that is much different than my own.
